Aviation Director Nyika Allen Announces Added Capacity Into and Out of the Sunport for Balloon Fiesta – September 20, 2018

Travelers looking for options to get to and from Albuquerque for the world’s largest hot air ballooning event have more choices thanks to added capacity from several airlines. American, Delta, and United have all added an average of 34 percent in the week leading up to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

“This added capacity for Balloon Fiesta not only gives travelers more options for one of New Mexico’s most well-known events, it also tells us that these airlines see the value in our market,” said Nyika Allen, Director of Aviation for the City of Albuquerque. “Air service initiatives play a vital role in our state’s tourism industry, and we are excited to be working with each airline serving the Sunport to help bring more people to Albuquerque for one of the state’s largest annual events.”

The Sunport has seen tremendous growth this year. For the first six months of 2018, passenger totals have been up nearly 14 percent and many carriers have added additional year-round capacity or new destinations. Travel for Balloon Fiesta is typically the second-busiest period for the Sunport, following the holiday season.

“Providing more travel options for folks to get to Albuquerque for Balloon Fiesta allows even more visitors to experience the many cultural attractions and traditions that our city has to offer,” said Mayor Tim Keller.

The Albuquerque International Sunport is owned by the City of Albuquerque and operated by the Aviation Department. According to a 2013 study, the Sunport has a $1.9 billion annual economic impact on the state of New Mexico.
