ABQ Sunport Provides Summer Travel Tips and Air Service Update
With the summer travel season in full-swing and continued increases in passenger traffic, the Albuquerque International Sunport is providing key recommendations to travelers. These tips, primarily addressing remaining COVID-19 policies and the TSA Checkpoint, will help ensure a smooth experience this summer.
Summer Travel Tips:
- allow sufficient time – arrive 1-2 hours before departure
- wear a face mask over your nose and mouth
- pack smart, be prepared – remember the 3-1-1 rule for liquids
- travel with ease, enroll in TSA PreCheck
- do not travel if you are sick

With recent surges in air travel, the Sunport continues to restore paused flights and additional frequency. The latest announcements, outlined below, come from Southwest Airlines. Tickets are on sale now.
- ABQ to San Diego resuming in November
- Daily flights operating midday
- Routes increasing in frequency, beginning in November
- ABQ to Dallas and Los Angeles – increasing to two daily operations each
- Holiday Schedule
- ABQ to San Antonio and Kansas City, each operating midday on the following Saturdays:
- November 20
- November 27
- December 18
- January 1, 2022
- ABQ to San Antonio and Kansas City, each operating midday on the following Saturdays:
- ABQ to Baltimore – increasing to three flights per week (Thurs, Sat and Sun) for 10 days during peak holiday period
“With this latest announcement, air service has been restored to all but three destinations offered before the pandemic. We are excited the gateway of our city is seeing such a spike in traffic, especially now that we’re fully open,” said Mayor Keller. “The rebound of the Sunport is one key indicator of how Albuquerque is recovering from the pandemic.”
“The summer travel season is shaping up to be a busy one, and with so many people traveling for the first time in a while, it’s more important than ever to remember these key travel tips” said Nyika Allen, Director of Aviation for the City of Albuquerque. “For those planning holiday travel, the welcomed additions to Southwest’s schedule provide even more options for convenient, non-stop flights throughout the country.”
In recent weeks, the Sunport has seen its highest levels of passenger traffic since before the pandemic began. The most recent seven-day average is 12,805, up 208% over 2020, and down 26% compared to pre-pandemic levels. At the height of the pandemic, traffic was down as much as 97%.
