Amazon Air Launches Operations at the Sunport
Retail giant bolsters local presence by delivering on intermodal transportation hub
ALBUQUERQUE — Today, Amazon is scheduled to launch operations out of its air cargo facility at the Albuquerque International Sunport, delivering on a development agreement with the City that was approved by Council in November 2021. The intermodal transportation hub is the latest addition to Amazon’s ongoing partnership with the City of Albuquerque to expand their footprint and boost the local economy. Over the past year, Amazon constructed a 30,000 sq ft cargo facility.
“We take great pride in officially welcoming the world’s largest retailer to the Sunport,” said Richard McCurley, Director of Aviation for the City of Albuquerque. “Amazon’s transportation hub is a tremendous addition to our cargo operations and a sign of continued growth. We look forward to partnering with them for many years to come.”
The lease and development agreement between the Sunport and Amazon consists of five acres of land southwest of the terminal, next to fellow air cargo operators, FedEx and UPS. The lease will allow Amazon to operate at the Sunport for 10 years, with the option to extend in five-year renewals, up to 25 years.
“We’re thrilled to expand our Amazon Air presence in ABQ at a brand-new facility to better serve our customers in New Mexico,” said Chris Preston, Director of Amazon Air Gateway Operations. “Amazon continues to invest in New Mexico and this gateway expansion ensures an increased capacity for delighting customers.”
“Bringing Amazon’s operations to the Sunport is another example of how our Aviation team is utilizing the gateway to the Land of Enchantment to boost our economy,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “This is a great partnership for our city and we’ll continue exploring additional opportunities for future growth between Amazon and Albuquerque.”
Currently, Amazon Air’s operations include one flight which lands and takes off after unloading and loading cargo. For media interested in B-roll of Amazon’s cargo facility, click here for a Google Maps pin to an easily-accessible location nearby.
