Calling All New Mexican Artists!
Sunport announces opportunity for artists to showcase work to millions of travelers
ALBUQUERQUE — The Sunport Reimagined Art Selection Committee is seeking responses from New Mexican artists interested in creating original artwork for the newly expanded and remodeled terminal building. The Committee seeks art works that reflect the Sunport’s unique sense of place, and is taking special steps to achieve a balance between traditional and contemporary aesthetics, artistic elements and depictions.
“We are calling on the entire New Mexican art community to participate in this opportunity to become part of our world-class Art Collection,” said Richard McCurley, Director of Aviation. “These works will be celebrated by our community and region for many generations and enjoyed by the more than five million travelers that pass through the Gateway of New Mexico every year.”
“This is a callout to artists across our state to help the Sunport tell the story of New Mexico and showcase our vibrant cultures,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We can’t wait to see what our local art community has in store to help bring the reimagined Sunport to life.”
An in-person artist information session and open house will be held at the Sunport’s Old Terminal on Saturday, June 24, 2023 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. This session is open to all New Mexico artist applicants, and a recording will be made available for artists who are not able to attend in person. Artists will see an overview of the art sites within the Sunport, learn about the application process, and have the opportunity to ask questions about the project.
“This project is a testament to the Sunport’s ongoing commitment to the community,” said Manny Manriquez, Sunport Innovation and Commercial Development Manager. “The curated artwork will provide a heightened cultural experience for visitors and locals and reflect the spirit of New Mexico and its dominance in the arts. We value our partnership with ABQ Public Art and together, we are setting the stage for our next round of featured artists.”
Public information on this initiative can be found here.
Artists who would like to be considered can apply here. All artists must submit their application package by either June 30 or July 14, 2023, depending on which opportunities the artist is interested in.
