New Sunport Deputy Directors will Focus on Enhancing Public Experience, Partnership with Federal Aviation Administration

Mar 3, 2020

The City’s Aviation Department welcomed two new Deputy Directors this week. Richard McCurley and Steven Petty will oversee the Albuquerque International Sunport’s landside and airside operations, respectively.

McCurley will oversee all aspects of the airport that are accessible by the public, including terminal building maintenance and custodial, as well as contracts and properties within and around the Sunport. Petty will oversee all aspects of keeping the airport operational, including airfield maintenance, the airport’s security plan exclusive of the TSA-run checkpoint, and interfacing with the FAA. The operation and maintenance of the security checkpoint will continue to be a function of the TSA.

“We’re bringing seasoned experience from other major airports right here to Albuquerque,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The Sunport is one of the best airports in the world, ranking in the top ten mid-size airports overall and the top ten in the world for art and culture, and it’s helping us compete for first-rate talent.”

“I am excited to welcome such experienced airport executives to work alongside existing executive staff to bring the City’s vision for the airport to life,” said Nyika Allen, Director of Aviation for the City of Albuquerque. “Under my leadership, we have begun to step out of our comfort zone and show the world what New Mexico is made of, and I am confident that Steven and Richard will be great partners in continuing this effort.”

McCurley spent more than 20 years in airport operations at the Houston Airport System, serving most recently as Interim General Manager and Division Manager of Operations. Under his leadership, Houston Hobby Airport experienced a total shutdown during Hurricane Harvey and welcomed over 300 parked aircraft for Super Bowl LI.

“This is a great opportunity to join the City of Albuquerque Aviation Department and support the vision and goals of Director Allen,” said Richard McCurley. “The Sunport is a unique gem in the airport community, and I look forward to using my experience from the Houston Airport System to contribute to the continued success of the Sunport.”

Petty most recently served as Deputy Executive Director of Operations and Chief Operating Officer at the Louisville Airport Authority and has served as a firefighter in both the United States Air Force and with the Cincinnati/N. Kentucky International Airport. His career in the aviation industry spans three decades.

“I look forward to joining the Sunport and continuing to forge the path of innovation alongside Director Allen,” said Steven Petty. “I look forward to bringing my passion for innovation and experience from the Louisville Airport Authority to help bring the Sunport to the forefront of our field.”

Flight patterns may be rerouted due to FAA runway maintenance. We appreciate your patience.
